1 Duplexing Techniques A number of techniques may be used to separate the directions of transmission on an optical fiber. These range from the use of a different fiber for each direction, through optical techniques using directional coupling and different wavelengths, to the use of electronic subcarriers and time multiplexing. 1 Fibers The simplest way of separating the directions of transmission is to use a different fiber for each direction. This technique is referred to as space-division multiplexing (SDM) or, more accurately, space-division duplexing (SDD).
In practice, this is not a significant problem, because the range of single-ball ping-pong is adequate for the initial deployment of systems. TCM has the advantage that it is unaffected by near-end optical and electronic crosstalk, since the receiver is inactive during the periods when it could detect a transmitted signal. It also has a second and major advantage that it can be implemented simply with only digital electronics. 2 Multiplexing Techniques Techniques used to separate the directions of transmission can often be adapted to separate different channels transmitted in the same direction.
