From the time he joined the firm as a graduate, I loved debating intellectual matters with him. When I was appointed Chairman of the International Accounting and Auditing Committee of Coopers & Lybrand, I asked Paul to share the responsibilitywith me by becoming the committee's Secretary. The audit methodology issued by the international firm, an important part of its intellectual property, owed much to Paul.
One mitigating factor as far as Nana would have been concerned was that Mick had introduced Mum to Dad. Dad was Mick's good friend. Eventually Nana relented and, having accepted Mum's decision, gave her a magnificent wedding with a reception at Elizabeth Bay House in 1935. Mum was twenty four and Dad was thirty one. Mum and Dad began married life at 2 Weeroona Avenue in Woollahra. Nana had especially built the duplex and lived upstairs while my parents occupied downstairs. I presume this arrangement arose because Dad had little money and Nana wanted Mum close even after she married.
He had plenty of personality and made friends easily. Dad liked little jokes quite a bit but it was a gentle joke. I suppose you'd describe it as a dry sense of humour. It was Mick, Mum's brother, who introduced Dad to Mum. When they met, Dad was not a socialite but he loved to socialise and would have been a hardworking guy. It was a love match and succeeded despite many difficulties. The main initial difficulty was that Nana, or Mrs E C Sweet, as she was widely known, did not approve. Nana did not admire the Sharpe family.
