Example text

This is a very typical Ellis intervention. He explains why Fiona isn’t a horrible person and in doing so reveals to her the problem with the part–whole error – that one cannot legitimately rate one’s whole self on the basis of a part of oneself – and tells her that if she really believes that she isn’t a horrible person then she will solve what is perhaps the major part of her problem. Ellis provides Fiona with a clear motivation for the disputing that follows. Fiona: Well actually it doesn’t, it probably is the reverse, it would be good for me to be that way because it’s healthy.

He is putting forward his understanding of some of Fiona’s core irrational beliefs and outlining to her, based on the information she has given him, the effect that these beliefs have had on her behaviour. While her core irrational belief about needing love is clear, Ellis’s hypothesis about Fiona having to act well and having to do the right thing and therefore be approved is more speculative. Fiona: Yeah I had to be the nice sweet little Fiona. [Ellis: Right] People would like me and think what a nice little girl.

He emphasises Fiona’s rational belief and shows Fiona that he isn’t challenging her inference at A that her colleague is acting badly. When you challenge clients’ anger-creating irrational beliefs at B they often think that you are challenging their inferences at A. Making clear that you are not doing so is an important part of the disputing process, as Ellis shows. Fiona: Just as I should get angry if that’s how I feel... Fiona applies the point about shoulds to her own beliefs about her feelings of anger.
