One of the most engaging displays was that of the four miniature room constructions taken from late-eighteenth- and early-nineteenth-century American history: Washington’s headquarters in Virginia, John Adams’s law offices, Jefferson’s bedroom, and Grant’s dining room. Note the incredible detail in these rooms—from the flowered chintz curtains to the moldings on the walls to the faithful rendition of furniture styles. The collection also includes the extraordinarily luxurious ob­ jects Forbes was able to gather—from the whimsical music boxes to the most elaborate of jewels and decorated objects in unusual shapes and configurations.

Added to these elements was the influence of a new industrialage excitement, evidenced by symbols representing speed and ma­ chinery itself. In addition, there were numerous exotic influences, ranging from the Aztec to the Egyptian. Nothing if not eclectic, 5 0 � manhattan Art Deco conveyed a sense of excitement and possibility, as well as a tremendous appreciation for the virtues of design itself. These elements affected architecture, as well as every other as­ pect of design, from interior decoration to fabric, glass, and furni­ ture.

Like many sculp­ tures at the Surrogate Court building, these statues are by Philip Martiny, the French-American sculptor of so many allegorical figures. Here we find Authority and Justice. On the right is Justice, a seated female figure once again holding a shield and scroll. On the left is Authority, who holds a scroll and the Roman fasces, the em­ blem of official power. Curiously, these seated figures have a sort 2 4 � manhattan of modern simplicity of shape, despite the traditional symbolism; their stoic expressions and large forms bring to mind more contemporary sculpture (these were made in ).
