For a short period it even seems that the world-economy is working for the hegemon and the modern world-system is the hegemon writ large as, for instance, when the twentieth century is called the 'American Century'. Mercantile modernity was created through the everyday life of commerce and the massive coterie of activities that it generated.

The assumption that modernity, however conceptualized, would be the 'great unifier' creating the world as a single homogenized space has not materialized. To begin with, places 'receiving modernity' have not been as placid as the diffusion model requires. More generally, there is a geohistory of modernities: becoming modern is negotiated in different ways in different places at different times. Thus modernity has been marked as much by variety as by uniformity. This un- Prime Modernities 39 evenness or 'patchiness' of modernity has been a recent concern of Goran Therborn (1995), who identifies four distinctive 'passes of entry' through which modernity has spread.
