Charles was hot and sweaty when Rita, a public health nurse, and I arrived. He was busy working outside trying to clean up the junk surrounding the house. I looked around. Broken glass, a rusty washing machine, piles of old tires, and boxes of junk littered the yard. Animals roamed freely in and out of the house which had no running water or plumbing. But their flower garden caught my eye. I like flowers, Page 30 so I asked about their garden. Pointing out one of their special flowers, they invited me to touch the soft bristles.

Nor is there beauty in the misery and suffering caused by injustice around the world. But painful circumstances make us transparent, revealing both the best and the worst in us. If I want to experience the beauty of intimacy, I must allow my protective buffers to drop and accept my innate vulnerability. I wonder how you experience the contradiction of beauty in the midst of pain.  . all my good friends around me and I felt a great bond with each one in a different way, a bond that was not a chain.

I'm surrendering to love, to the God of love, to the God who longs to breathe the breath of life into dry bones. I'm Page 54 particularly sensitive to the need to be clear that I'm surrendering to the God of love because the biblical concept of surrender has often been misused. I remember listening to a street evangelist preaching to a group of poor people in El Salvador. His text was Luke's story of the rich man and Lazarus. The preacher emphasized that Lazarus suffered patiently day after day as he begged by the gate and therefore received his reward in heaven.
